Sydney Reis
Is a geopolitics and emerging technology researcher and artist.
She is currently a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Oxford and Head of Research Fellowship at the Oxford China Policy Lab. Previously, she was an Innovation Officer at NATO, Gender Consultant at UNDP Rwanda, and Policy Analyst at the Government of Canada, where she worked on responsible and ethical technology policy.
Her research interests lie in understanding incentives, motivations, and aptitude for designing responsible technology, especially in dual-use and military technology companies. Using participatory design principles, her doctoral thesis seeks to develop a tool that will introduce geopolitics into scholarly and practical approaches to responsible innovation.
Her philosophical interests relate to how geopolitics is constructed by technology and how technology constructs geopolitics in turn. Current and critical inspiration includes Sheila Jasanoff, Lucy Suchman, Susan Strange, and Carlota Perez.
Sydney holds a BA in Political Science from Western University and an MA in International Affairs from Carleton University. She is hopelessly addicted to rowing and Wikipedia.
Based in Oxford, UK and someplace in the Canadian wilderness.
